It's summer on Nantucket, and as the season begins, three
women arrive at the local airport, observed by Josh, a local
boy, home from college. Burdened with small children,
unwieldy straw hats, and some obvious emotional issues,
the women--two sisters and one friend--make their way to
the sisters' tiny cottage, inherited from an aunt. They're all
trying to escape from something: Melanie, after seven failed
in-vitro attempts, discovered her husband's infidelity and
then her own pregnancy; Brenda embarked on a passionate
affair with an older student that got her fired from her
prestigious job as a professor in New York; and her sister
Vickie, mother to two small boys, has been diagnosed with
cancer. Soon Josh is part of the chaotic household, acting
as babysitter, confidant, and, eventually, something
more, while the women confront their pasts and map out
their futures.

The description of Nantucket is so detailed, I feel like I was there. The characters are well developed and real. This is a great story about friendship and life. It's about the things we keep to ourselves and the things we share with our friends.
It made me want to call up my sisters and take off for Nantucket. It also made me want to keep my sons a little closer to home. Every woman should read this book. I love to think I am as strong as the women in this book. There are plenty of "Cougars" out there. I laughed, I cried, I got mad, and I felt sympathy. It wouldn't hurt if some of you guys read it, too.
I went to the library and got the book. I never received the book, Barefoot, nor did I get a credit on my credit card for this item.
The characters were full of life and you felt for them and what they were going through one day at a time. Loved the characters.the pace was a little slower than I usually like but it was a good ride.
Great summer read or great to listen to on the long summer road trip to the beach. The audiobook was the abridged version, so I may invest in the paperback to read the entire work. I will be searching out other titles by this author. This title was given to me as an audiobook by a friend. I listened to it on a long road trip and became quickly engrossed in the lives of these women.
